Haus Gables

Project statement

This study focuses on the spatial relationships within the building to understand how they define the spaces, and how this building adapts to its context. This building stood out to me in particular because of its unique gable roof, which with research of the architect's concept and intentions, which stemmed from her desire to oppose traditional southern architecture. Instead of using stick-frame construction, she utilized CLT to create spaces through planes. Instead of basing the interior walls off of the exterior walls, this building's interior walls are based off of its unique gable roof, resulting in angular walls. After further analysis, I realized how the random, chaotic appearance of the house was done purposefully. The seemingly random intersection of gable roofs created angular walls that defined private and public spaces, and the “random” placement of windows allowed the building to circulate air effectively despite its surroundings.

Precedent analysis

Haus Gables was designed by Jennifer Bonner, director of the architecture studio MALL (Mass Architectural Loopty Loops) in 2018. The practice is known for its experimental, graphic approach to architecture and for challenging traditional tectonic and material conventions.

Haus Gables is located in the Old Fourth Ward neighborhood in Atlanta, Georgia, and was a self initiated development by Jennifer Bonner, designed to serve as a proof of concept for a single family house that makes the most out of the small urban lot.

Ventilation diagram

Since the precedent building was surrounded by structures obstructing the wind, this building recieves little direct wind. However, this diagram shows how the strategic placing of low and high windows allows this building to circulate cool air in and hot air out, effectively circulating and cooling down the building.

Isovist field diagram

The private bedroom on the first floor is not physically separated from the public space (dining + kitchen area) by a wall nor a door. However it is still implied to be a private space even without a physical separation from the public space via door/wall. Therefore this diagram aims to show how private places can be separated from public spaces without the presence of a physical border through two dimensional isovist fields.
